As many American Jews increasingly feel vulnerable and concerned about their safety, meaningful steps can and should be taken to help restore a sense of security within Jewish communities. Shalom in Messiah believes that one practical and compassionate response is for Israel-supporting churches and faith communities across America to offer support in tangible ways.
Many churches already maintain volunteer safety or security teams dedicated to protecting their congregations during services and events. These teams may include individuals with prior military service, law enforcement experience, professional security backgrounds, or other relevant training.
Because Christian worship services typically take place on Sundays, many of these trained volunteers may be available on Friday evenings or Saturdays, when Jewish communities gather for Shabbat services. Some may be willing to offer their time and presence — free of charge — as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity, simply out of care and respect for the Jewish people.
Often, the key step is simply making local synagogues aware that such support is available from people they can meet, evaluate, and choose to trust.
If You Are a Pastor or Faith Leader
Identify the synagogue(s) closest to your church or faith community.
Find the name of the Rabbi or synagogue leader and reach out respectfully (by phone, email, or letter).
Introduce yourself and your congregation. Briefly explain that your church has a volunteer safety team and would welcome the opportunity to meet and explore whether your team could be of service.
If they are open to it, arrange a meeting at their convenience and in a location of their choosing. The purpose of the meeting should be to express care, solidarity, and a desire to support their community’s well-being — not to advance theological discussions.
Ask about their specific needs and explore whether and how your team might assist, at no cost to them, if they so desire.
If You Are a Congregant
